Outboard Troubleshooting Guide: Fix “Won’t Start” Issues With Confidence

When your outboard motor won’t start, it can be overwhelming - especially if you don't know how to figure out why. What are the most likely causes? How do you check if there’s gas in the tank? What do you do with that bulb in the middle of the fuel line? What even is a kill clip, and why is it important?

This waterproof, fuel-proof pamphlet walks you through exactly what to check and how to fix common issues, with clear, step-by-step instructions designed for total beginners.

Originally created to help new boaters confidently handle dinghy outboards, this guide covers 80–90% of typical problems and ensures you can get back to shore quickly and safely, no matter your experience level.

What’s Inside • Confidence at Your Fingertips
  • Step-by-step troubleshooting chart to identify problems based on symptoms
  • Clear explanations of what to check, how to check it, and how to fix it
  • Temporary fixes to get you home or to a safe location
  • Glossary of basic terms for easy understanding

Covers issues like:

  • The engine won’t start
  • It dies while running
  • It sputters and won’t stay running

No tools? No worries. This guide avoids anything complex and focuses on what you can easily check and fix on the spot - most solutions don’t even require opening the engine cover.

Designed for Life Onboard

Compact and tough, this guide is built to stay right in your boat, ready when you need it:

  • Waterproof and fuel-proof material resists tears, grease, and stains
  • Special matte finish reduces glare for easy reading in sunlight
  • Foldable map design tucks neatly in your dinghy or gear bag and opens easily to any section

Always there when you need it, this guide is a safety net for any boater.

Made in USA • Built to Last • Environmentally Friendly

Designed in the USA; printed in the USA on American-made recyclable synthetic paper using environmentally-friendly soy-based inks at a facility that is completely wind-powered. Minimal packaging. Tough enough to last in harsh conditions and built to keep you prepared.

Shipping & lead times

We're a small team of boaters and we pack orders within 1–5 business days (no weekend or holiday packing). You'll get an email with tracking as soon as a label goes on your box.

Specialty items — fire extinguishers (dangerous goods) and low-stock or built-to-order gear — can take longer; the product description will say so. On a tight timeline or meeting your boat somewhere specific? Contact us and we’ll work out the fastest way to get gear to you.

International orders ship DDU: local duties, taxes, and customs fees are the buyer’s responsibility. Full details in our shipping policy.

Returns & refunds

30-day returns from the date of purchase. Items must be unused, in the original packaging with all cables and accessories, with proof of purchase.

Contact us before shipping anything back — we’ll send the return form that must accompany your return. Fire extinguisher and lithium battery items carry a $15 administrative fee on returns.

Read the full refund policy.

Ask a cruiser before you buy

Everyone here is a current or past cruiser — we’ve docked short-handed, re-rigged at anchor, and chased 12V gremlins too. Not sure this is the right fit for your boat? Send us your question before you order and we’ll give you a straight answer.
