TeamO Inflatable PFD with BackTow Technology – Built for Sailors, Cruisers, and Racers

When conditions get lively, experienced crews reach for gear that simply works. The TeamO inflatable PFD with BackTow technology combines UK build quality with thoughtful engineering for long watches, night entries, and offshore passages.

This inflatable harness provides 170 N (≈38 lb) of buoyancy, exceeding the ISO 150 N offshore standard. The added lift rides the wearer higher in chop for better airway clearance and visibility under tow.

ProSensor Elite inflation auto‑activates on immersion and offers a manual pull. An inspection window lets you verify cylinder status before leaving the dock. Reset and re‑arm are straightforward - ideal for passagemaking routines.

  • Integrated deck safety harness D‑ring for tether attachment
  • SOLAS‑approved water‑activated light (≈8‑hour operation)
  • Fully integrated sprayhood for wave and spindrift protection
  • Double crotch straps with rear adjusters for a secure, low‑ride fit
  • Comfortable cut for foul‑weather layers and harnesses

BackTow™: Controlled Towing After MOB

After inflation, a large BackTow handle rotates the wearer face‑up and seats them for astern, controlled towing alongside the hull - reducing forward drag and airway flooding typical with conventional tethers. Recovery is simpler; even a smaller crewmate can winch from the strongpoint.

For crews who prioritize seamanship over gimmicks, the TeamO inflatable PFD with BackTow technology is a quiet upgrade that matters when it counts.

Choose the TeamO inflatable PFD with BackTow technology for inshore nights, offshore races, and bluewater cruising - reliable, checkable, and designed by sailors.

Size:

Suitable for adult chest sizes 68cm-144cm

Certifications and Approvals:

TeamO inflatable PFD are approved by the following international standards:

  • ISO12402-3 approved

Please note: TeamO Inflatable PFDs are a UK-designed, world-class product that has the highly regarded world standard of ISO12402-3. TeamO Inflatable PFDs do not have Transport Canada or US Coast Guard approval.

Many countries coast guards state, "You are required by law to have a lifejacket or PFD (Personal Flotation Device) onboard for each person on a watercraft." The Lifejackets or PFDs must be state and country approved to be counted. Investigate your local laws and rules to follow suggested guidelines.

If you're concerned with ISO12402-3 approval, visit the ISO standards page here. For other questions, review our FAQ or contact us.

Standards & Certification

Buoyancy (inflated) 170 N (38 lb)
Certification ISO 12402-3 (150N class, exceeded at 170N) with integrated ISO 12401 deck safety harness
Firing head ProSensor Elite water-activated with front inspection window for at-a-glance status checks; manual pull backup
BackTow™ Patented moveable harness point - if you go overboard while tethered, BackTow rotates you to be towed on your back, face clear of the water
Made in United Kingdom - stocked and shipped from our US warehouse, duty and tariffs already paid
Re-arming Re-arming kits for ProSensor, UML Mk5i, and Hammar heads are available in our store - re-arm after any inflation and inspect annually
US approval note TeamO lifejackets are ISO-certified and have not been submitted for USCG type approval. US-flagged boats must still carry USCG-approved PFDs for each person aboard; many offshore sailors wear a TeamO for its MOB performance while meeting carriage rules with onboard jackets.

Before you buy

  • BackTow is designed for a tethered sailor overboard scenario, where the harness point can rotate the wearer into a safer face-up towing position.
  • TeamO lifejackets are ISO-certified and have not been submitted for USCG type approval. U.S. boats should still carry USCG-approved PFDs as required.
  • Use the 170N ProSensor Elite 38g re-arming kit for compatible Offshore 170N ProSensor models.
  • For offshore use, check fit over your foul-weather gear and inspect the firing head annually.

Shipping & lead times

We're a small team of boaters and we pack orders within 1–5 business days (no weekend or holiday packing). You'll get an email with tracking as soon as a label goes on your box.

Specialty items — fire extinguishers (dangerous goods) and low-stock or built-to-order gear — can take longer; the product description will say so. On a tight timeline or meeting your boat somewhere specific? Contact us and we’ll work out the fastest way to get gear to you.

International orders ship DDU: local duties, taxes, and customs fees are the buyer’s responsibility. Full details in our shipping policy.

Returns & refunds

30-day returns from the date of purchase. Items must be unused, in the original packaging with all cables and accessories, with proof of purchase.

Contact us before shipping anything back — we’ll send the return form that must accompany your return. Fire extinguisher and lithium battery items carry a $15 administrative fee on returns.

Read the full refund policy.

Ask a cruiser before you buy

Everyone here is a current or past cruiser — we’ve docked short-handed, re-rigged at anchor, and chased 12V gremlins too. Not sure this is the right fit for your boat? Send us your question before you order and we’ll give you a straight answer.

Why BackTow exists

The problem with a tether overboard

Clipped on and over the side, a conventional inflatable PFD tows you face-down through the water while the boat is still moving — exactly when you cannot help yourself. It is the known worst case of wearing a tether.

What the handle does

After inflation, you pull the large BackTow™ handle on the right-hand lung and the harness rotates you into a face-up, seated position under tow — airway clear, ready for recovery. TeamO holds the patent; no other inflatable harness does this.

Plain honesty on certification: TeamO jackets are certified to ISO 12402 (the UK/EU standard) and are not USCG type-approved — TeamO has not sought US approval. US boats should still carry USCG-approved PFDs to satisfy carriage rules; many of our customers wear the TeamO and stow the approved jackets.

Before you buy

Is it USCG approved?

No — TeamO certifies to ISO 12402 (UK/EU) and has not sought USCG type approval. To meet US carriage requirements, keep USCG-approved PFDs aboard; the TeamO is the jacket you actually wear for its BackTow protection.

ProSensor or Hammar — which firing head?

ProSensor fires when its water-sensitive element gets wet — fast, and right for most sailors. Hammar is hydrostatic: it fires on water pressure from submersion, so rain, spray, and green water over the deck will not set it off — the pick for wet working decks. Both have a manual pull backup.

170N or 275N?

170 N (38 lb inflated) is the standard for coastal and offshore sailing. Choose 275 N if you sail bluewater in heavy foul-weather gear or carry tools — the extra buoyancy is there to float the extra weight, and it rights an unconscious wearer more decisively.

Which re-arm kit fits my jacket?

The kit must match your exact jacket model and firing head — check the label inside the jacket before ordering. We stock Mark 5i (Coastal), ProSensor Elite 38 g, Hammar 170N, and 275N Elite 60 g kits.

Do I need a tether too?

BackTow protects you because you are tethered — pair the jacket's integrated harness with a triple-hook safety tether and jackstays you trust. Clip on before you leave the cockpit.

What maintenance does it need?

Inspect before the season and after any inflation: cylinder weight and firing head per the label, no chafe, dry storage. Re-arm after every inflation with the matching kit. TeamO's SOLAS light carries a 5-year warranty; service the jacket per the manual.
